AIM Mission Monasteries
Today, as in the beginning of Benedictine life in Europe over 1500 years ago, Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries of men and women throughout the world continue to be centers of prayer, hospitality and education.
In Africa there are 131 communities, with Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo most prominent. India, the Philippines and Viet Nam lead the list of the 107 communities in Asia. One-hundred and sixty-two communities are located In Latin America—Brazil, Argentina and Mexico having the greatest number.
For the past 40 years, approximately 4 or 5 new communities have been founded each year—almost 200 new foundations. With the 11 communities in Oceania, there is now a total of 411 mission monasteries throughout the world.
